Meet Sam: Founder and Visionary
Sam Dunlap, a Raleigh, NC native, was immersed in the world of landscaping from his early years. Growing up in a home where his late father operated Hughes Dunlap Landscape Services, Sam’s roots in the industry run deep. His childhood surroundings fueled a passion for outdoor work and hands-on craftsmanship.
Following high school, Sam sought to refine his skills and embarked on an eight-year apprenticeship under the guidance of master stone mason Jeff Behringer. It was during this transformative period that Sam developed a profound appreciation for hardscapes, shaping the foundation of his business model.
In 2016, Sam initiated Grand Design, initially as a side venture, all while maintaining a full-time position in the same field. This strategic approach allowed him the time to meticulously hone his craft, delve into the intricacies of running a business, and perfect his understanding of the industry.

The turning point came in January 2023 when Sam, armed with years of experience and expertise, made the bold decision to transition Grand Design into a full-time enterprise. Thus, The Grand Design Outdoor Enhancements LLC was born.

We had the pleasure of working with Sam from Grand Design in May of this year. From the beginning, we knew this would be a positive experience. Sam gave us a free estimate and helped us with the design of our stone patio and fire-pit after listening to what we were looking for. (We even added a stone pad for our trash cans and some nice stepping stones to the patio which really turned out to be a beautiful addition!) Sam was prompt and reliable and even worked with us when we decided to make the patio a little bigger after seeing the final layout. He was a pleasure to work with and really went above and beyond to give us an incredible final result. He worked hard to get the patio finished in time for the start of the summer season and his price was beyond reasonable. (We had several other estimates from other companies for the exact same patio that were way more expensive). We absolutely love the final results and everyone that has stopped by asks us who built this beautiful patio!! We would highly recommend Sam and Grand Design. When we need any type of stonework or landscape design in the future, we will absolutely use Grand Design!!
